Improving Access to Computer for Female Literacy and Language Students

About

Our mission is to help adults who live or work in Tompkins County meet their personal literacy and life goals, free of charge, by improving their ability to read, write, speak English, and use math and computers.

In order to fully engage with their workplaces, healthcare providers, children’s schools, and government and other agencies, adults must know how to use a computer, access email, complete online forms, and perform other digital skills. Access to reliable computers and quality instruction is essential for the women who receive tutoring through our program.  Almost all possess very low to intermediate literacy skills. We specifically target this   population for services because research shows that increases in language, literacy, numeracy   and digital skills improve employability and economic security, high school equivalency   attainment, and participation in post-secondary education and training.

Further, additional research demonstrates that increases in maternal literacy correlate with   better health outcomes for women and their children, greater caregiver participation for   those with children in school, greater participation in community life (such as volunteering   and registering to vote) and reduced poverty for women and their families.
