Family Reading Partnership provides books and literacy resources to every child in Tompkins County. We give away over 20,000 books each year, over 3,000 of those at The Nook. Our programs are varied; from indoor spaces like The Nook, to our 7 year-round outdoor Story Walks, to quick transactions like the Bright Red Bookshelves. This is an intentional approach to be available to as many families as possible, in ways that will appeal to a wide range of interests and levels of access.
The Nook is an engaging play area available at no cost for caregivers with infants and children 5 and under to talk, sing, read, and play together to build essential early literacy skills. The Nook is a relaxing place for families to interact together, as well as an access point for free children’s books to take home and keep. The Nook is open and free to all visitors. We see a wide variety of caregivers coming in to utilize the space; parents, grandparents, siblings, babysitters, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, court-appointed supervisors, foster parents, and more have discovered this space to be a welcoming and thoughtful early childhood environment. We have expanded hours that include evenings and several federal holidays to increase accessibility for working parents.
